Rough night for Revs and RIFC

For one New England Footy team the season just began. For the other, the nightmare start continues. Rhode Island FC lost 2-0 to Charleston Battery last night down in South Carolina. Both of Charleston's goals came off of poor set piece defending from Rhode Island.

It seems that Charleston took a page out of Arsenal's set piece playbook. Both of the Battery goals were balls put in right at RIFC keeper Koke Vegas. The first, Vegas poorly punched out, and the ball was steered in by Cal Jennings of the Battery. The second, Vegas couldn't get to and was easily headed in by Jennings again.

RIFC created a few opportunities in the game. Noah Fuson put in a sumptuous ball on the games opening minutes, but their was nobody there to steer it in. One surprise for me was JJ Williams coming on as a sub, and not starting. Williams had a volley opportunity late in the game but hit the ball over the bar.

Rhode Island goes back to the drawing board and travels to Phoenix next Saturday night.

For the Revs, it was a night of disappointment in New York as the boys in Blue dropped a 2-1 result to the pigeons. The Revs did score their first goal of the year, however it was an own goal as Brandon Bye put in a cross, which was redirected in by NYCFC defender Thiago Martins.

Aljaz Ivacic made some stellar saves on the day but was let down with poor defensive transition on the first goal and an unmarked man on the 2nd after a massive save.

After the match Revs captain Carles Gil was visibly upset and isolated himself from teammates. Many Revs players and staff went over to check in with the #10. This is something to keep an eye on.

Caleb Porter was asked after the game about his job security and professionally answered he is not focused on that and trying to get the team better. That question was removed by the Revs communication team and will not be included in any Revs organization post game presser notes.

As most know this is how they operate over there when tough questions are asked. This is just how it is. There is minimal accountability. and sadly the product on the field is well below MLS standards. The FO, the coaches and players all need to look in the mirror and come to a realization in regards to how embarrassing this has become.
