Revs avoid Cupset

toddtinkham

The New England Revolution avoided an early round US Open Cup exit last night. Dave Romney was the unlikely hero for the Revs scoring a 76th minute goal to put New England ahead 2-1 vs Hartford. It took a Carles Gil being subbed in for the Revs to gain full control over the game and move on to the next round of the US Open Cup competition. Justin Rennicks opened the scoring for New England in the 13th minute. Rennicks showed well on a rare start to the team. The score remained 1-0 until the half. Hartford equalized in the 52nd minute when Prince Saydee drove down the right side and put in a low ball across to Antoine Hoppenot who redirected the pass into the side netting beating New England keeper Earl Edwards. The score remained tied and New England coach Bruce Arena was forced to bring on subs if New England were to win. Carles Gil assisted on Romney's 76th minute goal making immediate impact when he came on the pitch. For Hartford it was a great showing on and off the field as Hartford had over 100 supporters in attendance. New England moves on to the 4th round of the US Open Cup. They await their next opponent.
