Talles Magno and Santi Rodriguez lived up to the billing on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium as NYCFC beat DC United 3-2. Talles Magno opened up the scoring on a cross from Gabriel Pereira. The ball across was a bit behind Magno but he was able to steer the ball past DC keeper Tyler Miller to open the scoring. Not too long after that Santi Rodriguez was able to get through the porous DC defense and slot in NYCFC's second goal of the night. Wayne Rooney was able to galvanize his team in the second half making 3 substitutions. Those subs paid immediate dividends as Mateusz Klich sent in a cross to Christian Benteke who was able to head the ball into the side netting to bring a goal back for DC. The next 40 minutes we're a stalemate with both teams only creating half chances. That's when Santi Rodriguez picked out Thiago Andrade and sent him through where Andrade calmly chipped the keeper in the 88th minute of play. With The Citizens up 3-1 the 4th official held up the the board indicating 9 minutes of stoppage time. This seemed to lift DC, shortly after the notification of 9 minutes Klich found the head of Steve Birnbaum bringing DC back within 1 goal. With NYC trying to kill off the game DC were gifted another chance when Benteke found himself wide open to the right of NY keeper Barranza. Benteke scuffed his shot and then the offsides flag went up. The game ended with no more meaningful chances and the sky blue escaped with a 3-2 victory. The 9 minutes of stoppage time was primarily because of 2 injuries to DC players. Pedro Santos and 16 year old LB Matai Akinmboni. Santos with a knee knock and a bloody nose for Matai. NYC is definitely dangerous in attack, but we're vulnerable in the air. DC surely will tighten up their back 4 leading up to the New England Revolution game. DC needs a bounce back game vs Revs and NYCFC are hopeful to continue their winning ways as well.
