Footy New England was in the building for Gold Cup 2023 final. Santiago Gimenez's 88th minute stunner was enough to carry Mexico to the 1-0 win over Panama. The game itself was a back and forth affair.
Mexico had the majority of the ball, but both teams had quality chances to score. Mexico appeared to have opened the scoring in the 22nd minute but the goal was ruled offsides. The rest of the game saw both teams fight and scrap for chances and opportunities. In the end it was Mexico hosting there 9th Gold Cup trophy.
The game was played at spectacular SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. There were 72,963 fans in attendance mainly supporting Mexico. When Gimenez scored the eventual game winner the skies rained with alcohol and water and SoFi became a Splash pad dousing fans everywhere.
Panama put up a valiant effort but were unable to break through due to lack of cutting edge in the final third. Gimenez the hero of the day plays his club football at Feyenoord in Netherlands. Gimenez's goal was right near the top of the best individual goals we have ever seen. He was able to hold up the play with a defender draped all over his back and then cut the ball back and made a darting run to the goal and eventually wrong footed the Panamanian keeper sliding the ball to the keepers left and the ball then dribbled over the goal line for the winner.
The scenes then took place with a thunderous roar from the Mexican faithful. We were once again blessed to be at a sporting event with the magnitude of the Gold Cup Final.
