MLS is back opening weekend has commenced for the New England Revolution. Unfortunately for them DC United wasn't as hospitable as they would have liked. A Christian Benteke hat trick carried DC to the 3-1 victory in Washington DC, Saturday night.
The game took a turn for the worst for New England when DP Striker Giacomo Vrioni was sent off in the 25th minute with his second yellow card. Shortly after that Benteke scored his 1st of the night, and the score at the half was 1-0.
New England was undaunted equalizing before the 66th minute with a wonder strike, finesse curler from 2021 MLS MVP Carles Gil. The tie was short lived as Benteke netted again just minutes later. Benteke put the nail in the coffin in stoppage time with a header in which New England keeper Henrich Ravas should have claimed or punched away.
The game ended 3-1 with Benteke garnishing MOTM accolades. For New England it was game 1 of the Caleb Porter Era in MLS play. Revs host Independiente in the 2nd Leg of Concacaf Champions Cup play next Thursday night. Revs were victorious in Leg 1, 1-0.
